Die grosse Popularität des iPod deutet auf das grosse Bedürfnis hin, die Stadt mit dem eigenen Klängen zu individualisieren. Durch den iPod setzt man sich Raum, Zeit und Grenzen um die eigene Person in der Öffentlichkeit. Das Projekt untersucht den abgestuften Übergang von Öffentlichkeit zu Privatsphäre im öffentlichen Raum. Es verbindet drei Gegebenheiten miteinander: das Community Gardening, das Bedürfnis, mit dem eigenen Soundtrack die Stadt zu individualisieren und die starke Verbreitung neuer mobiler Technologien, wie z.B. den iPod. Der Tactical Sound Garden TSG Toolkit ist eine offene Software Plattform. Einerseits ermöglicht das Toolkit jedem, der sich innerhalb der Frequenz 802.11 wireless (WiFi) "hot zones" bewegt, mit seinem Laptop, PDA oder mobile phone "sound gardens" für den öffentlichen Gebrauch zu installieren. D.h. man nimmt Geräusche auf und verankert sie mit den realen Koordinaten des Ortes auf einer virtuellen Landkarte. So entsteht eine virtuelle Klanglandschaft, die sich über die reale öffentliche Landkarte legt. Andererseits kann jeder auf die Plattform zugreifen und sich diese "sound gardens" anhören. Mit Kopfhörer und einem mit dem WiFi verbundenen Gerät ausgerüstet, driftet der Benutzer durch die virtuellen "sound gardens", während er sich durch die Stadt bewegt.

Chikashie Miyama / Chingo

Chingo ist ein Improvisations-Performance Duo, das auf Sensor Instrumenten spielt. Chikashi Miyama spielt „Qgo“ und Shingo Inao „Tosso“. Der Name des Duos Chingo ergibt sich aus deren beider Namen (Chikashi – Shingo). Inao entwarf beide Instrumente. Die Konvertierung der elektronischen Spannung von MIDI zum Qgo übernahm Miyama. Mehrere Sensoren, wie Beschleunigungs- und Infrarotsensoren, sind am Instrument installiert, um dessen Neigung und Abstand zwischen ihm und anderen Objekten zu messen. Microcontrollers and ICs digitalisieren die Spannung von den Sensoren und übertragen sie via MIDI Kabels auf den Laptop. Zusätzlich nimmt ein Mikrophone die Stimme Miyamas auf und ein anderes den Ton des „Tosso“. Beide Mikrophone sind ebenfalls mit dem Laptop verbunden. Eine von Miyama entwickelte Software mit mehreren Toneffektparametern verarbeitet in Echtzeit die Daten der Sensoren mit den Tönen aus den Mikrophonen. Das Ziel der beiden Künstler ist es, die visuellen und theatralischen Aspekte der live Electronic Performances hervorzuheben mittels Sensor- und Computertechnologien und neue Arten des Zusammenspiels zwischen Performance und Elekronik zu erforschen.

The popularity of the iPod in urban environments points toward a desire to personalize the experience of the contemporary city with one's own private soundtrack. These devices also afford the listener certain exceptions to conventions for social interaction within the public domain. Donning a pair of earbuds grants a certain amount of social license, enabling one to move through the city without necessarily getting too involved, and absolving one from some responsibility to respond to what’s happening around them. In effect, the iPod is a tool for organizing space, time and the boundaries around the body in public space.

Yet to what degree does this urban spatial practice contribute to a withdrawal or retreat of the modern urbanite from public space by distancing her or him from the encounters and frictions found there?

The Tactical Sound Garden TSG Toolkit is an open source software platform for cultivating virtual "sound gardens" within urban public space. It draws on the culture of urban community gardening to explore new forms of social interaction within technologically mediated environments. The TSG Toolkit supports the creation of shared social spaces within which people cultivate collaborative sonic environments. The project attempts to spatialize the practice of “playlist sharing” in the context of everyday urban environments as a means to transform passive mobile listeners into active participants in shaping the sonic topography of the contemporary city.

Chikashi Miyama / Chingo

"Chingo" is an improvisation performance duo, playing original sensor instruments. Chikashi Miyama plays "Qgo" and Shingo Inao plays "Tosso". The name of the duo, "Chingo" stands for the given names of them. (Chikashi - Shingo). Both instruments are designed and produced by Inao. The voltage to MIDI conversion circuit for Qgo was planned and assembled by Miyama. Several sensors, such as acceleration sensors and infrared sensors, are installed in the instruments for detecting the tilts of the instruments and the distance between them and other objects. Micro-controllers and ICs digitize voltages from these sensors, and send them to a laptop as values via MIDI cables. In addition to them, Miyama wears a miniature microphone for picking up his voice. Another microphone is attached near the sound hole of Tosso. Both microphones are also connected to the laptop. A Software, developed by Miyama, receives values from sensors and maps them to various kinds of sound effect parameters for processing sounds from microphones. All electronic sound employed during the performance is processed in realtime. The goal of the two artists is to enhance the visual and theatrical aspects of live electronic performances, employing sensor and computer technologies, and to explore new kinds of interactivities between performers and electronics.

digitalen Umfeld und setzt sich mit der kulturellen Praxis Filesharing
(und den Brüchen und Lücken, die diese Praxis im System
sichtbar macht) auseinander.

Download Finished ist ab 02. Juni 2007 im Rahmen der Ausstellung
«appropriate - manipulate - feedback!» im Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich zu
sehen.
