Sandra Gibson & Luis Recoder (USA)

Sowohl einzeln als auch in Zusammenarbeit erforschen Recoder und Gibson die Bildschicht des Filmstreifens mithilfe des Mediums Licht, indem sie Belichtung und Projektion manipulieren.

Ausstellung: Light Spill (Installation)

In der Installation Light Spill benutzen die beiden Künstler die Basismaterialien des Cinemas: Projektor, Zelluloid und Leinwand. Der Projektor wird zum Lichtwerfer reduziert, indem er unscharfe Bilder auf die Leinwand projeziert. Gleichzeitig wird die Filmrolle auf den Boden abgespult. Die abgespulten Filmstreifen wachsen im Verlauf der Ausstellung zu einem unkontrollierten wirren Berg an, welcher die faszinierende Materialität des Zelluloid zur Geltung bringt.

Luis Recoder, USA

Seit seinem Bachelor- und Masterabschluss an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkley und San Francisco Art Institute in 1999, arbeitet er als erfolgreicher Filmemacher. Seine Arbeiten gehören zur Sammlung des Whitney Museum of American Art in New York und des Museum of Contemporary Cinema in Paris und wurden gezeigt an dem internationalen Film Festival in Wien, am 32. internationalen Film Festival in Rotterdam und an den Whitney Biennials in 2002 und 2004. Er betrachtet sich mehr als Lichtkünstler, denn als Filmemacher, mehr als Skulpteur, denn als Cinematograph. Er interessiert sich für das projezierte Bild und für die cinematographischen Apparaturen als Mittel, um Licht zu bündeln und zu streuen. Chrissie Iles, Kurator des Whitney Museum, vergleicht ihn mit James Turrell: Beide Künstler benützen Licht, um die Grenzen zwischen dem Substanziellem und dem Unfassbaren zu erforschen.

Sandra Gibson, USA

Ursprünglich ausgebildet als Malerin, transferierte Gibson die Untersuchung an Farbe und Form zum Medium Film. Während ihre früheren Arbeiten (Soundings 2001, Edgeways 1999) mit einem Optical Printer gemacht wurden, ist in ihren aktuellen Arbeiten die Oberfläche des Filmmaterials direkt bearbeitet. Ihre Filme wurden vielfach gezeigt an Veranstaltungen wie dem London Film Festival, dem internationalen Film Festival Rotterdam, am Videoex und Pacific Film Archive.

Light Spill (Installation)

A projector in a room spills the contents of a film reel onto the floor. For the interval in which there is no visitor, the projector must remain running with the lamp on. A projectionist in attendance re-threads the projector with a full reel of film only if and when a visitor is present in the gallery. Over the course of the exhibition there will emerge an uncontrollable growing heap of entanglement flooding the gallery’s floor. A light spill, so to speak.

Luis Recoder (USA)

Recoder’s meta-cinema has propelled him into a kind of semi-stardom of his own. In the last three years, his films and film performances have appeared at the New York Film Festival, the Viennale, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and Anthology Film Archives. Whitney Museum curator Chrissie Iles compares Recoder’s films to the work of light sculptor James Turrell: both artists use light to explore the boundaries between the palpable and the insubstantial.

Sandra Gibson (USA)

Originally trained as a painter, Gibson has taken the exploration of shape and color to the medium of film. While her earlier films (Soundings, 2001; Edgeways, 1999) were made with an optical printer, recent works address the film’s surface directly. Her films have been widely screened at such venues as the London Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, VideoEx and Pacific Film Archive.
